Resumen:

The current challenges for bone and cartilage tissue repair and the use of chitosan for bone and cartilage tissue engineering are reviewed in this chapter. The bone tissue characteristics, defects, and common treatments are described, as well as the cartilage tissue morphology, defects, and treatment options. Furthermore, electrospinning with its advantages and disadvantages as a technique for the preparation of electrospun materials and their importance in tissue engineering applications are outlined. Thereafter, the chapter details electrospun materials for commercial tissue engineering linked to the use of different specific materials, particularly the use of chitosan in the tissue engineering field. The industrial use of chitosan and its physicochemical and biological properties, and the main problems related to electrospinning of chitosan are discussed. Finally, the toxicity and regulatory issues of chitosan and electrospun materials are briefly commented upon. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.
