Resumen:

Infections by intestinal protozoan parasites that cause diarrhoea and extra-intestinal complications in humans and other vertebrates are of major public health importance worldwide. Entamoeba histolytica and Cryptosporidium spp. induce very serious infections while Giardia duodenalis and Blastocystis spp. are related to inflammatory bowel diseases. Importantly, the host immune system plays an important role in the pathogenesis of the diseases or disease complexes linked to these infections. This chapter reviews innate and adaptive immune responses, parasite evasion mechanisms, immunopathology, role of intestinal microbiota and vaccine strategies against these four important intestinal parasites, and provides a perspective for the control of these infections and their transmission. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.
