Resumen:

The metabolic activity evaluation in aquatic environments, i.e., primary production (PP) and respiration (R), is crucial to comprehend biogeochemical cycles of major elements and organic matter processing. The spatial and temporal dynamics of phytoplankton biomass, PP, and R in the tropical Lake Alchichica have been measured using different approaches. The light and dark bottles method indicates the gross primary productivity (GPP) averages 110 ± 86 mg C/m3/d, net primary productivity (NPP) is 15 ± 143 mg C/m3/d, while R averages 78 ± 75 mg C/m3/d. The GPP: R ratio averages 4.39 ± 6.84. By using the in situ natural fluorescence approach, the water column integrated GPP averages 379 ± 151 mg C/m2/h and the water column integrated chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a) averages 28.29 ± 11.54 mg/m2. GPP and Chl-a showed to remain relatively steady with a predictable seasonal fluctuation along 15 years. Acetone-extracted Chl-a averages 4.2 ± 4.2 µg/L indicating the oligotrophic status of the lake. There are three main annual phytoplankton events with higher PP and Chl-a concentration: a winter diatom bloom (along the water column) during the mixing period, a spring, surface, cyanobacterium bloom at the stratification onset, and the development of a deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) at the metalimnion during the well-established and part of the late stratification. The lake hydrodynamic (warm monomixis thermal pattern) drives the lake metabolism. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.
