Resumen:

The warm monomictic thermal regime of Lake Alchichica largely influences the carbon stocks type, amount, and available for the food webs, but also the carbon partitioning on main carbon flux pathways. This chapter presents the state of knowledge of the food webs of Lake Alchichica through the interconnected pelagic, deep and littoral districts. It acknowledges the efforts made to understand the carbon flux pathways based on the pelagic primary production, the hydrodynamic control on it, and their role in the carbon flow pathways. The benthic-pelagic coupling leads to seasonal hypoxia and further anoxia, regulating the deep benthic trophic structure. The littoral zone holds higher complexity and functioning, where detritus plays an important role. Finally, this chapter recognizes the gaps in the food web knowledge and suggests the next steps needed to forecast future lake ecosystem changes associated to global and climate change. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.
