Resumen:

There is a global concern about the contamination of soil and water specifically and the environment in general. The excessive use of agrochemicals, fertilisers and antibiotics in agricultural activities has strongly contributed to this problem. However, if we change our ways of producing food, it is possible to reverse the problem. Increasing biodiversity in production systems is one of the best options to protect the health of our ecosystems. Food production that applies the principles of agroecology strongly contributes to resolving the current situation of soil degradation, water contamination and general environmental pollution. The objective of this chapter is to analyse the potential of applying agroecological principles to manage natural resources more efficiently, with special emphasis on the use of shrubs and trees integrated into animal production systems to diversify and improve food quality. Diversified systems have the advantage of being more resilient with better adaptation and mitigation potential. In addition, they are one of the best strategies for connecting food production systems with natural resources, generating environmental services and animal welfare, as well as significantly reducing the use of pesticides, antibiotics and other agrochemicals. In this sense, agrosilvopastoral systems are presented as one of the most effective options to restore soils, and to protect biodiversity and the health of agroecosystems in tropical conditions. © 2023 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
