Resumen:

Diabetes mellitus (DM) prevalence is increasing worldwide; the World Health Organization predicts there will be 300 million people having this disease by 2025, and due to an increase in prevalence, diabetes has become an epidemic throughout the world and one of the leading causes of death, affecting approximately 422 million people globally. Based on available epidemiological studies, diabetes is associated with increased risk of depression, and vice versa, a depressive disorder increases the risk of metabolic diseases like diabetes and chronic complications of diabetes mellitus of both types. The high prevalence of the comorbidity worldwide is characterized by high morbidity and mortality. Evidence is growing about: (1) biological mechanisms particularly Inflammation and innate immunity, dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, abnormalities of the sympathetic nervous system, and circadian rhythms; (2) social and psychological mechanisms like hygiene and dietetic measures and stage of development; and (3) antidepressant treatment. More studies are needed to improve understanding of the shared origins of depression and diabetes that could provide the most appropriate treatment for comorbidity and improve the quality of life of patients. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019, 2023.
