Resumen:

Known for the production of handcrafted Christmas-tree glass baubles and a festival that celebrates life, Chignahuapan, a small town in central Mexico, was designated as 'Pueblo Magico' ('Magical Town') in 2012. As with any town that has the distinction, promotional images of the town have been disseminated nationwide to attract scores of visitors. To compete with other Pueblos Magicos, Chignahuapan has chosen to adopt the axolotl as a trademark of its tourist offer and local cultural heritage. In an effort to reinforce the axolotl's presence as an element of local identity and belonging, images of the amphibian have been distributed throughout the town, while live specimens are displayed in several spaces. The axolotl is associated with the idea of regeneration, which has influenced the way both local inhabitants and tourists conceive of the town. As such, Chignahuapan has the potential to become a zoopolis, however additional work is needed to dismantle innate hierarchical structures. © CAB International 2023.
