Resumen:

Where habitats have lost populations of native species, there is potential for reintroducing diverse genotypes, species, and assemblages. Biodiversity is best restored by enhancing remnant ecosystems, where soils, microbial communities, and native biota are still intact. In more degraded sites, abiotic and biotic limitations constrain restoration efforts. Highly degraded sites require major changes, which favor commonly occurring, aggressive species, often exotics. Rare species likely require specific microsites or unique establishment opportunities. Continual, long-term management is necessary in altered landscapes, where novel conditions prevail. Strategic landscape plans would prioritize sites for preservation, reintroductions, ecosystem restoration, and novel plantings. © 2023 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
