Resumen:

Global biodiversity is declining at accelerated rates. To understand how the loss of biodiversity is connected to the well-being of societies two key complementary concepts are useful: ecosystem services, developed four decades ago, and nature's contributions to people, developed a few years ago in the context of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). Observational and experimental evidence supports positive impacts of species richness on nature's contributions to people, although the impact of other attributes of biodiversity are beginning to be explored, as intraspecific diversity, composition and complexity of communities, common and rare species. Modeling nature's contributions to people into future scenarios require understanding the ways in which biodiversity interacts with societies. © 2023 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
