Resumen:

Hydrogels are crosslinked polymeric networks, highly hydrophilic, with enormous potential for the development of biomedical and industrial applications because of their characteristic swelling/deswelling. Moreover, some hydrogels can respond to external changes, which are known as smart or stimuli-responsive hydrogels. The principle of this intelligent polymeric system is the ability to change its physical and chemical properties in response to external changes and biological factors. Several factors influence the properties of smart polymers, such as monomer origin (natural or synthetic), concentrations, type of polymerization, etc. These polymeric systems have been studied in the biomedical field as promising materials for health care. This review presents the main remarkable characteristics and the types of smart hydrogels in response to external changes such as temperature, pH, light, magnetic field (magnetic nanoparticles), and biological factors (enzymes, peptides, glucose). Besides, some applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering, three-D (3-D) printing, and wastewater treatment are described. © 2024 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
