Resumen:

Inorganic contaminants, mainly arsenic, fluoride, and nitrates, are present in many drinking water sources in the Mexican territory. Besides, metals such as chromium, manganese, and iron reach levels above the drinking water standards have been detected in specific zones. The geological, hydrogeological, and social complexity of the country poses difficulty regarding the identification of the specific contaminant sources and implement adequate solutions to protect the population?s health. Although arsenic comes mainly from natural sources, anthropogenic actions may worsen the problem by adding other sources or promoting the increase of the concentrations; a similar situation is also present in some sites for the other contaminants. Traditional treatment procedures have been established in some areas; however, their continuous operation faces various problems related to funding and technical issues exacerbated in low-income populations. To solve this problem, research groups have developed innovative methods such as using low-cost adsorption materials, including minerals such as zeolites, calcite, and Fe-oxides, the establishment of wetlands to treat polluted water, and the application of phytoremediation to refrain the impact of solid wastes. This chapter will give an overview of the state of the art regarding identifying contamination sources, knowledge of the environmental chemistry, and efforts developed in Mexico to remove arsenic, heavy metals, and nitrates from drinking water sources using innovative procedures. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
