Resumen:

Globally, soils are being degraded at an unprecedented rate. This chapter provides an overview on the extent of soil degradation and its main anthropogenic controlling factors. Most controlling factors are related to land mismanagement or overexploitation to satisfy the increasing demands of the growing global population. Positive feedback loops between climate change, land-use changes and socio-political pressures exacerbate soil degradation. This chapter also briefly introduces the chapters that focus on soil quality and monitoring, physical and chemical soil degradation processes, for example, erosion, pollution and salination, and biological soil degradation processes. Novel remediation approaches for contaminated soils are summarized, which aim to restore degraded lands to safe and beneficial reuse. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
