Resumen:

Between 1982 and 1994 the Mexican financial system underwent many changes. The nationalization and privatization of the banking sector were protagonists in the debt crisis and later in 1994. The privatization process, in turn, implied financial deregulation, a situation that in December 1994 contributed to the bankruptcy of the recently privatized financial system. At the macro level, enormous fiscal, trade, and current account imbalances prevailed, contrasting with high national debt in pesos in government bonds, which were bought and sold in national currency but paid in dollars to protect the investors from possible devaluations. © Sara Hsu 2023.
