Resumen:

This chapter will expose the way in which the Mexican television consortium Televisa has not only been in charge of broadcasting professional soccer matches in Mexico, but has also been an active agent in shaping the tastes and practices of soccer fans in our country. Since their foray into first division soccer in the late 1950s, the Azcárraga family and its partners have been fundamental actors in the administration and management of the Mexican league and federation, as well as having a determining weight in Concacaf and at the time in FIFA. In particular, Televisa's interference in Mexican professional soccer and its international commercial projection will be exposed. To this end, the ways in which they were awarded the 1970 and 1986 World Cup venues and the close relationship that Emilio Azcárraga Milmo maintained with the FIFA leader João Havelange over several decades will be described. It will also be necessary to describe Televisa's close relationship with the holders of Mexican political power and in particular with the hegemonic party, that is, the PRI. Finally, it will be argued that this form of management and commercial administration of soccer was key in shaping the tastes of the Mexican soccer fans. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.
