Resumen:

This chapter focuses on one inequality exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic in the context of Mexican society: Mexican women have been forced to take on more unpaid care work, to the detriment of their ability to hold paid jobs outside of the household. To create a more just society in regard to care work, we propose three main mitigation strategies based on fostering formal equality: 1) increasing public funds for free childcare in order to create a truly robust federal care system; 2) amending federal labor legislation to oblige private work employers to extend greater childcare benefits to workers; and 3) conferring equal childcare rights upon both men and women, since rights conferred exclusively upon women come to be a form of indirect discrimination against women themselves, as well as a form of direct discrimination against men. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Linda C.
