Resumen:

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are a very promising material since they present chemical and physical properties useful for water treatment. They respond to a magnetic field, and this feature is especially convenient for the extraction and removal of heavy metals and contaminants from water, which are magnetically separated without a major change in their structure and efficiency. Polymer coating and polymer grafting onto the surface of different MNPs and microspheres have opened the field of application, and not only that, but this functionalization has also allowed the addition of other compounds or molecules (and macromolecules) with special interest. The combination of MNPs and polymers has allowed for heavy metal absorption by complexation with the functional groups present in the polymeric structure and other materials. In this chapter, we present a brief description of polymer functionalization of magnetic particles as an introduction and specifically the use of comb polymers grafted onto MNPs for the removal of heavy metals from water. Additionally, an overview of some strategies used to capture heavy metals using these materials and the corresponding absorption mechanism are also presented. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd.
