Resumen:

Owing to its geodynamic nature, volcanic activity in Mexico is of high relevance. Out of the more than 500 existing volcanoes, 18 of them have presented significant levels of activity in historical time. Such activity is mainly concentrated in the so-called Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, where circa 50% of the total population of Mexico is concentrated. High vulnerability and exposure of people living at risk around active volcanoes demand sound alliances between the scientific and technological community and policymakers to foster volcanic integrated disaster risk management (InVolDRiM). Therefore understanding and addressing volcanic disaster risk should involve not only volcanic instrumentation and monitoring, but also sustained collaboration with different stakeholders from a transdisciplinary perspective. The aim of this chapter is to analyze the existing interface between science and policy making and practice regarding InVolDRiM in Mexico to identify challenges and opportunities directed toward disaster risk reduction. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
