Resumen:

Due to a fast start-up and high power density PEM Fuel Cells are considered the most promissory power source for automotive applications. According to the Department of Energy (dOE), some of the mayor issues that limit the mass applications of PEMFC are the weight, cost and volume. Bipolar plates (bPs) are major components of the PEM Fuel Cells that account for 80% of the weight and 45% of the total cost of PEMFC. Besides conducting hydrogen and oxygen gases, BPs serve to extract electrons and heat from the reaction places. To accomplish these tasks low hydrogen permeability and corrosion rate of the BPs material is desirable. In this work we report the hydrogen permeability results obtained in a Devanathan-Stachurski cell and the corrosion degradation study by means of electrochemical and physical characterization in Aluminium A91100 for BPs application. The results show that this alloy combines light weight with adequate hydrogen permeability and corrosion resistant to be considered as a suitable material for PEMFC Bipolar Plates.
