Resumen:

This chapter analyses the plurality of visions and values there are about biodiversity and its conservation. Although the concept of biodiversity seems to be universal, different people and cultures understand it differently. In this chapter I argue that biodiversity conservation is a social and political action and process. The questions of what, how and where to conserve should therefore not fall exclusively within the scope of the natural sciences. I also analyse how conservation action, by its nature, is a significant source of conflict between the different actors involved, since all human decisions?and therefore also conservation?are inherently political, are driven by power, and occur in the framework of a global neoliberal economy that aims to generate surpluses.
