Resumen:

This chapter reflects on the nature and scope of library collection strategies described here as "collections in diaspora," and more specifically as "the bibliographic diaspora." Although issues of ownership of cultural objects have focused mainly on the role of museums and private collections, these same reflections apply to libraries as well: UNESCO holds that books, documents, and even entire library collections are to be considered cultural heritage. Some scholars have proposed digitisation as a possible form of "cultural repatriation"; although we generally agree with this optimistic stance, we believe that the digitisation of cultural objects does not completely resolve the issue of restitution: while representing an alternative form of access to the claimed objects, it is not likely to resolve further claims of ownership. The chapter briefly presents some of the countless projects that have gathered together works that are scattered in different libraries and made them available online, allowing the reunion, albeit virtual, of objects originally created to be shown, used, or displayed together. At the same time that digitisation allows expanded access to these diasporic objects, it also revives important discussions about claims from their countries of origin. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Isabel Galina Russell and Glen Layne-Worthey; individual chapters, the contributors.
