Resumen:

The documentation of the cultural, botanical and pharmacological foundations of traditional medicine in Mexico has continued over the last five centuries. For three centuries in New Spain, indigenous practitioners as well as Spanish chroniclers recorded the botanical descriptions, illustrations and curative properties of indigenous herbal remedies. During the Independence Period and into the present day, periodic compilations have registered over 3000 plants that form the basis of Mexican ethnopharmacology. Assemblages of taxonomically distinct plants that share morphophytochemical properties in addition to similar names and therapeutic applications comprise medicinal plant complexes. Contemporary Mexican markets continue to provide materia prima as well as being a conduit for traditional knowledge related to herbal remedies. In recent years, the complexity of the international and national political environment has challenged the application of ethnopharmacological research to bioprospection and conservation programmes. © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
