Resumen:

Recovery is an integral phase of the disaster management process and is generally framed as an intervention point to address and improve lost societal well-being. Social science methodologies to investigate recovery are diverse and reflect multiple disciplinary and practitioner-informed perspectives. In this chapter on social scientific recovery research, we focus on (1) normative approaches, and (2) frameworks that are based on guidelines and principles. We identified four main types of research designs for each category. For normative approaches, this chapter investigates ethical considerations in recovery research, longitudinal designs, social network analysis, and narrative techniques. For frameworks, which are often utilized by institutions that must analyze recovery for policy design, recovery assessments, non-economic loss and damage, forensic approaches, and auditing methodologies are discussed. Recovery research has considered a wide range of social scientific approaches, and a thorough discussion is useful to produce more innovative and impactful inquiries in this matter. © 2025 Bimal Kanti Paul and Luke Juran.
