Resumen:

Reading in the future seems to be leaving sequential reading behind and heading toward a two-dimension and three-dimension literacy thanks to technological progress, which enables the creation of written, visual, and sound contents integrated into hypertexts. This leads to a simultaneous and interactive reading of electronic books, audiobooks, transmedia narratives, and the metaverse; this way, the reader becomes a spectator. These new modalities affect cognitive skills for reading. Therefore, it is essential to keep promoting sequential reading as a core cognitive skill for the future. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
