Resumen:

Nutritional science studies the relationship between food ingestion and health. The skin is among the organs that can show distinctive manifestations of nutritional excess or deficiency. Protein-energy malnutrition, now termed severe acute malnutrition, is the most prevalent nutritional disease worldwide. Infections, including HIV, and a background of deprivation are implicated. In developing countries, malnutrition is observed mainly due to insufficient quantity of food whereas in industrialized countries it is related to an inappropriate diet. Other causes include metabolic alterations, intestinal malabsorption, congenital malformations interfering with food intake or digestion, systemic diseases such as acquired immune deficiency syndrome and malignancy, anorexia nervosa, diets for treatment of disease, allergic disorders and child neglect. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
