Resumen:
The expansion of online education as a result of the closure of higher education institutions caused by the pandemic led to the so-called emergency remote teaching, however, online education differs from this because it considers the adoption of its own instructional design for the modality that enhances deep learning, that is, active learning. This communication addresses the characteristics of the term emergency remote teaching, the differences with virtual education, as well as the instructional models most used in this last modality. Likewise, the distinctive features of active learning, its link with instructional design and some activities offered by technological platforms and didactic strategies for this are exposed. It ends with some general ideas as a conclusion aimed at assessing the importance of promoting active learning in students that provides them with the necessary tools to face the demands of 21st century society.
