Resumen:

The treatment of chronic diseases needs patient's engagement to be successful, therefore, clinicians involved in the treatment of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease must reserve time in medical appointments to teach self-management interventions and give patients trustworthy information about their disease. The ultimate goal of self-management strategies in COPD is to give the patients the knowledge and skills to cooperate with their health provider to improve disease control, improve quality of life and prevent exacerbations. The self-management interventions include education, the development of a COPD action plan, strategies for symptoms control, teaching adequate inhaler techniques, stimulating a healthy lifestyle and long-term oxygen therapy use when required. The evidence that supports self-management strategies is controversial but it seems to improve health related quality of life and lower the risk of respiratory related hospital admissions. More evidence regarding the benefit of the specific interventions is required. © 2022 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved.
