Resumen:

Population growth has led to increased food production and resource consumption in parallel; generating a great amount of waste. These wastes, if not treated or exploited, create environmental problems that affect the standard of living of human beings. In recent years and on different continents, research has been done on bioenergy issues to produce environmentally friendly energy. In this sense, bioethanol production has taken importance as a biofuel. It is estimated that its annual global production is 29 million tons. It seeks to obtain from the conversion of waste, particularly biological and agricultural. Most of the waste is lignocellulosic biomass. Therefore, pretreatment is necessary to improve their conversion efficiency; they can be physical, physicochemical, chemical, and biological. Obtaining bioethanol from agricultural and industrial waste provides an opportunity to use it as biomass and generates value-added products. In this chapter, an exploration of different agricultural wastes, their main characteristics, and their performance in the production of bioethanol is carried out. Furthermore, a deep discussion of various microorganisms in charge of fermentation and the advantages and disadvantages of existing pretreatments focused on bioethanol production are presented. © 2023 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
