Resumen:

Modern hospitals around the world impacted urban environments, whether they were small works or large health complexes. However, there have also been illnesses that necessitated geographical isolation due to the specific nature of the diseases, requiring distance and seclusion to promote health benefits. Iconic examples of this type of facility were the tuberculosis sanatoriums, leprosarias (or leper colonies as they are known in English) or hospitals for mental illnesses, which had to be built outside traditional urban settings, the first two for fear of contagion and the third, under the model of ?rural hospitals?, in response to the psychiatric theories that recommended urban isolation at the time. In Mexico, several psychiatric facilities were built under this model in the mid-twentieth century. Their authors designed large hospital complexes outside the cities, which made it necessary for them to include living quarters for the health personnel, as well as spaces for physical or mental recreation for the patients. However, at the end of the 20th century, new psychiatric theories took a clinical turn, recommending the patient?s closeness to their social and family environment, which has transformed their original sense of isolation and places them at risk of patrimonial vulnerability. From some case studies in Mexico City, this model will be identified using a methodology based on consulting institutional archives and visiting psychiatric facilities to identify the characteristics of this vulnerable hospital heritage. It is expected that the result obtained will be a reflection on how to rethink its relationship with the contemporary city. © 2024 Docomomo International, Ediciones ARQ. All Rights Reserved.
