Resumen:

© Oxford University Press 2025.With more than 3,800 species, Neotropical bird diversity is the richest in the world. Efforts directed to conserve this diversity have resulted in an extended protected areas (PAs) network in which not all areas have been designated following scientific criteria. For this chapter, the already established PAs were reviewed to detect coverage in species representativeness and to prioritize high-species-richness areas requiring immediate conservation actions. PAs cover 24% of the land area and contain an average of approximately 27.2% of the distribution area of all Neotropical bird species and approximately 27.8% of the distribution area of threatened species. However, 558 species are gap species, for which less than 10% of their range is protected. This analysis showed that strategically increasing protection coverage to 30% would substantially increase the representativeness of PAs to approximately 36% for all species and greater than 42% for threatened species. The results of the review undertaken for this chapter represent a critical baseline to establish effective conservation programs.
