© 2026 IEEE.Cultural eutrophication denotes the human-driven acceleration of nutrient enrichment in lake systems, often leading to algal blooms, declining water quality, and rapid shifts in ecosystem structure and function. Despite its relevance to freshwater security, the research landscape on cultural eutrophication in lakes has not been systematically mapped across major bibliographic sources. This study delivers an integrated state-of-the-art mapping by combining bibliometric data mining with network analysis. We queried Scopus and Web of Science (WoS) in July 2024 using 'cultural eutrophication lakes', and applied linguistic analysis to abstracts and author keywords to characterise how the concept is framed in the indexed literature. We then reconstructed scientific collaboration networks and quantified centrality at three scales: global (countries), regional (organisations), and local (authors). Network concentration was assessed through degree distributions and complementary cumulative degree distributions. From highly cited records (=slant 100 citations), we extracted 26 concept descriptions and found that operationalisations are dominated by biophysical indicators, with limited explicit treatment of governance or social drivers. Collaboration networks exhibit heavy-tailed connectivity consistent with Pareto-type behaviour, indicating strong concentration of ties. Overall, results reveal asymmetric knowledge production between the Global North and Global South, with implications for research visibility, capacity building, and agenda-setting relevant to freshwater sustainability. These patterns matter for agenda-setting, capacity building, and evidence visibility relevant to freshwater governance and SDG 6. Scope note: Findings characterize the English-language, indexed literature captured by Scopus and Web of Science and therefore do not represent the full global evidence base (e.g., regional databases and non-English scholarship). Implications: The observed concentration of collaboration and semantic framing has direct implications for freshwater governance, evidence visibility, and capacity building aligned with SDG 6.
