© 2005 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.The Basin of Mexico (Fig. 1) is a highland (2,240 m above sea level) comprising lacustrine, alluvial and volcanic sediments surrounded by volcanic mountains (Fig. 2) primarily of Pliocene-Quaternary age, but also with lesser portions of Miocene and Oligocene age rocks. The lake basin, was first opened to the south during the Early Pleistocene. During the Middle to Late Pleistocene, significant volcanism resulted in the creation of the well-known Popocatepetl and Ajusco, between which numerous monogenetic volcanoes have since emerged, mostly during the last 50,000 years (Martin del Pozzo 1982).
