Resumen:

© The Royal Society of Chemistry 2026Current energy sources are largely derived from fossil sources and thus achieving the climate action targets contained within United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2030 remains unlikely. This outlook must be changed by promulgating incentives, carbon tax credits by governments, and investing in renewable energy technologies. The integration of renewable energies such as solar, wind, geothermal, hydro, and biomass into electricity grids will significantly facilitate carbon neutrality. Furthermore, point source carbon capture and storage (CCS) and/or utilization is a promising technology for removing carbon dioxide and CO2 from the atmosphere that has already been commercialized. The integration of CCS in chemical industries for the synthesis of fine chemicals will boost the viability of CCS technology. Renewable energies such as solar, wind, geothermal, and hydro suffer from intermittency problems and they are geological location-specific. Hence, the integration and use of these technologies must be accompanied by effective battery storage. Therefore, this chapter elucidates the concept of carbon neutrality in general, focusing on the potential impact of fossil fuels, different renewable energies, and nuclear energy on achieving this goal, whilst also illustrating the benefits, challenges, costs, and storage facilities required with industrial case studies. The idea is to provide perspectives on the scenarios, bottlenecks, and solutions that can be applied by industries to avoid CO2 emissions.
