All rights are reserved.This chapter examines whether the activities of the Mexican banking sector during the period of globalisation adhered to traditional banking functions ? particularly loan issuance ? or whether they shifted towards a transnational banking model centred on asset management and cost-reduction strategies. To address this question, we analyse the organisation of the Mexican financial system by exploring the balance-sheet structures and income sources of key banking institutions. The chapter?s hypothesis is that, in Mexico, the G7 banks did not fully adopt the dominant transnational model because large domestic institutions ? both financial and non-financial ? carry out their funding operations through global financial centres. Under these conditions, monetary policy becomes subordinated to fluctuations in foreign interest rates in order to sustain financial flows, thereby bolstering banking profits. To support this hypothesis, the chapter examines the evolution of the international financial system, with particular attention to the diversification of banking activities; the structure and performance of the Mexican financial system, emphasising the major institutions; and, finally, the composition of assets and liabilities, along with the income sources of the various banking entities.
