Resumen:

© 2025 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.The longitudinal growth of the root depends on the root apical meristem (RAM) activity. This chapter reviews the organization, function, maintenance, and cell flux in the RAM. General features of the RAM include progenitor cells, promeristem, and transit-amplifying cells; these, together with specific features, are considered in detail. As the root is a polar organ, and cells are produced mainly in the longitudinal direction, the longitudinal zonation in the RAM is scrutinized. Organization of the quiescent center, activity of the initial cells, and cell proliferation and flux from the quiescent center to the proliferation and transition domains of the RAM and to the elongation zone are reviewed. These processes underlie cell production, and how this is related to root growth is also considered. The RAM organization is reviewed from cellular and molecular viewpoints addressing RAM types, radial patterning, and cell type specification. Gene regulatory networks involved in RAM maintenance are considered. When RAM maintenance is compromised, the RAM shows inducible or constitutive exhaustion. How this happens and what the main questions in regarding RAM activity and function are also discussed.
