Resumen:

Within the framework of developmental sciences, the study of individual differences allows us to recognize the existing variability regarding the maturation of different cognitive domains between groups with different bio-psycho-social characteristics. Regarding the acquisition of language, variables that directly influence lexical development have been identified, and can refer both to complex processes (for example, processing speed) and sociodemographic factors (such as the family context). Specifically, socioeconomic status (SES) has been described as one of the main variables that explain individual differences during the language acquisition process. Therefore, it is critical to use instruments that allow a systematic evaluation and consider the variety of contexts to which infants are exposed, so that we can consequently make a fair assessment of their language skills. In this chapter, we analyze the estimation of vocabulary of Mexican infants of different SES backgrounds, presenting an ad hoc parental report and considering maternal education as an SES indicator. The results help us to better understand the effect of maternal education on the language development of infants and represent a contribution to the literature on language development in Spanish learners, from the perspective of individual differences. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.
