Resumen:

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) describes risk factors that can eventually trigger metabolic, cardiovascular, or neurovascular disease onset. The widespread transition of dietary patterns and lifestyles has become a worldwide public health problem. Disorders of the gut microbiota (GM) are a risk factor for MetS. Establishing treatments that combine genetics, nutrition, and metabolism for health is necessary. Nonpharmacological treatments such as lifestyle modification, diet, use of probiotics, and prebiotics are involved in the genesis, prevention, and control of MetS. Acanthocereus tetragonus is a cactus endemic to southern Mexico considered a neglected and underutilized species with potential health-beneficial properties as described from ancient times. In this chapter, we review the nutritional and antioxidant properties besides the beneficial effects on MetS of A. tetragonus by modifying the GM; and discuss its use as a functional food and prebiotic for its ability to modify GM. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
